SOMEONE HAD SHOT at them.

The thought terrified Erika. She didn’t doubt for a moment that Roger would have her killed if that’s what it took to get guardianship of Marcus. She wouldn’t let that happen. She’d never allow Marcus to become like his father and grandfather.

Which meant she’d have to run again.

It would be harder this time. She’d have to figure out what to tell Marcus. He wasn’t a baby. He’d demand answers, and he deserved them. And he wouldn’t be the only person looking for answers. She’d built a life in Carling Lake she couldn’t have imagined ten years ago when she’d fled Los Angeles—her job, Lance and Daisy. Maybe most surprisingly, she’d started imagining a future—running the B&B and, recently, picturing what it would be like to open herself up more, to consider the possibility that she didn’t have to be alone.

She shot a glance across the room at James. He and Lance spoke in hushed voices in front of the old fireplace, which she had visions of firing up during the cold winter months. As if he could feel her eyes on him, James’s gaze tracked to hers and held for a long moment.

Once Lance and his deputies had arrived, they’d moved from the kitchen to the library, where they could all be more comfortable.

She sat on the overstuffed green velvet couch, Marcus tucked into her side. He’d been reluctant to take more than three steps away from her, even after Lance’s arrival, which was fine with her. Even though she knew they were no longer in immediate danger, her heart was still struggling to catch up.

Still, something didn’t feel right about Roger being behind the shooting. Not that she’d put it past Roger to target her. But Marcus? She couldn’t see Roger taking the chance that Marcus would get hurt.

Deputy Bridges escorted Daisy into the library.

“I came as soon as I heard. Are you okay?” Daisy sat down beside Erika and threw an arm around her shoulder in a one-armed hug. The action jostled Marcus awake, who’d been dozing on the other side of Erika with his head on her shoulder.

“We’re all a bit shaken up but unharmed,” Erika answered, leaning into her friend’s side.

Daisy chattered on about how the news that someone had taken a shot at Erika was making its way around town, but the only news Erika was interested in at the moment was whatever Deputy Bridges was saying to Lance and James. She couldn’t hear them from where she was sitting on the other side of the room but, from the pinched look on all three men’s faces, it wasn’t good. The three men crossed the library.

“Hey, Marcus, you think I can talk to your mom alone for a minute?” Lance said.

The sleepy haze fell from Marcus’s face, replaced by a steely resolve. In answer to Lance’s question, he scooted closer to Erika.

She suspected that Marcus’s bravado wasn’t totally about protecting her. “It’s okay, Marcus. Why don’t you show Deputy
